    The Story behind the goods

So, over Christmas, years ago, I see this absolutely awesome set of (incomplete) spur straps on Ebay.

Being Christmas, with then young kids at home, bidding on them was just not going to happen. But they were just too cool to forget.

After some research, I found that they are extremely close to the spur straps shown in Tombstone, in the scene where Wyatt Earp rakes his spur across Ike Clanton's cheek and sends him "runnin from hell"...

That was the last straw. I had no choice but to make my own version of these!! The actual tooling is simplistic, but the detail in the scallops, bevels, and borders was a challenge that simply had to be met.

The original shown above was rather compact and very wide, about 4" - right where your ankle would bend when you wear your spurs as most do today. Now, historically, when cowboys tended to ride all day with their boot all the way into the stirrup, they had a tendency to prefer a very wide spur strap like that to protect their boots and relieve some stress on their ankle. That, combined with the typically very soft leather boots (often calvary) boots these working cowboys wore often being better suited for the spur to be worn just above your heel (watch Tombstone again, you'll see). Well, many people these days don't ride like that, and the idea of making the body of the straps just a little longer, and slightly more narrow, to improve their comfort for those of us on and off our horses and walking some portion of the day - made perfect sense.

Maintaining the original look through the scalloped edges, three layers, and fine attention to the borders, stitching, and bevels between was key. As the original set I saw lacked the buckle side, I also had to consider how to put together the off side to make the set a cohesive and complete pair of spur straps.

After some consideration over my sketch book, I came up with my design. As the originals had been designed to bear a concho, this set was to be yet another in my line following the Southwestern style - buckles go in, conchos go out. This was to keep the heavy, thorny brush of the desert SW from grabbing the buckle end of the strap / more narrow portion as you rode. I added an access point to the lining, so you can actually get your finger in behind the lining and get the straps on and off the spur buttons...something I have never seen in a fully lined strap with the keyhole in the lining. Makes sense to me, and, oh yeah, it is my project after all!

So, here we have it. Finished a custom mixed color, antiqued, brass buckles, and hand (saddle) stitched all the way around.

This particular set is in use - because, as always, we thoroughly field test all the gear we make. I am, of course, happy to make you a set of your very own!
