Custom Leather Musicians' Notebook
Price for a basic, untooled notebook, with custom dye work and simple borders, would be about $650
Something custom made of a gorgeous, pre finished leather would bring the price down (varies by material) - $TBD
A reproduction of the notebook shown (or similar level of detailed artwork and dye work) would be about $1300
Materials included:
All leathers are a Veg Tan finish, to allow for custom dye work
- Cover: 6-7 oz cow hide, for tooling and durability,
- Interior: 2 oz pig, for flexible strength and durability,
- Zipper Gussets (lined): 1.5 oz calf, for durable softness and ease of zipper function.
This also allows the dyes to match more closely between the cover and zipper gussets.
- Covers and spine have re enforcement added between the layers
- #5 Brass YKK zipper for long term service
- Solid brass rivets to re enforce interior pocket corners
- Interior is machine stitched
- Exterior and zipper gussets are hand Saddle Stitched for added strength, durability...and class ;)
Due to the nature of the materials and process, each product is a work of art, and no two will be exactly alike.
The amount of detail required for the tooling and custom dying of a project varies by design. Quotes are based on a combination of the cost of materials, plus the time needed to complete the artwork.

The Story behind the Yggrdrasil Musicians' Notebook
This piece is the result of the collaboration between Lone Horse Leather, and an up and coming Clarinetist.
The requirements that needed to be met were specific:
- Keep Scores contained (for those who may not know, Music Scores are larger than typical US paper size, and very expensive. If they are damaged, the musician often needs to compensate the Orchestra...)
- Specific storage for reed case, business cards, and pencils
- Keep rain out
- Be large enough to corral (also even more oversized) Orchestral folders
- Display his style in a tasteful way
This young man is very proud of his Norse heritage, and the idea of the Yggdrasil, or, essentially, the Norse version of the Tree of Life, came up several times in conversations about the custom artwork that was being commissioned along with the folder. Connecting his past and heritage, to the excitement of his future, was a fun challenge in the creation of the artwork!
The Yggdrasil, more accurately referred to as the Worlds' Tree, has several key elements that should traditionally be included (per my admittedly somewhat limited understanding!). The upper level, seen as the lands encircling the tree's trunk, is meant to represent the realm of man. In Norse mythology, there is a bridge, Bifrost, which connects the realm of man to Asgard, the realm of the Gods. This is represented by the waterfall, disappearing into the depths of the great trees' roots, where the lands of the gods and the underworld were believed to exist.
It is said that, on the day of Ragnarok (the end of days, for man and the gods), the mighty serpent Midgard will rise from the sea, and fire giant Surtr will set the tree on fire. Both of these creatures can be seen, waiting, as ever present as their presence in the stories from the Old World.
Here we come to Odin, the ruler of Aesir, tribe of deities. It is said that he hung himself from the branches of the Yggdrasil, and I felt that his presence needed to be represented as well. Most well known Norse gods had 2 spirit animals that are typically depicted with them in the rare occurrences where they were represented in ancient artwork. Odin was accompanied by his 2 ravens, both to be found in the carving on the notebook. As for Odin himself, he is there, though not in a traditional representation. As a part of the story of the Yggdrasil, he is represented as a presence, a hint; a feeling of being watched.
The main artwork, being the Yggdrasil, is on the back of the book, while the front dispalys a Treble Cleft and is intended to be the display side for more formal occasions.
The light border frames around the edges of the cover, and the interior of the piece, are intended to have be a subtle representation of wood, with a variation in color lending a feel of texture to bring the piece together.
